Health info:Pollution DI (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DHP) and DI-Isononyl phthalate (DINP) in Food Imports From Taiwan

1. Please be informed that the Ministry of Health (MOH) has issued a media statement in relation to pollution (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) in some of Taiwan's output of food products reported in the media since May 25, 2011. DEHP and DINP is a chemical used in plastics manufacturing to make it soft (flexible). It can be transferred (migrate) to the food during the manufacturing process, packaging and storage. DEHP is known is likely to cause carcinogenic effects on humans. However, there is still a lack of scientific evidence related to the human carcinogenic effect DEHP.

2. Food products are involved in sports drinks, fruit juices, jelly products, jam, yogurt and clouding agent, a food additive. Materials DEHP and DINP has been added to the clouding agent to reduce the cost of food production. The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has notified the Ministry of Health on a number of food products in Taiwan that has been confirmed contaminated with DEHP, and were exported to Malaysia for further action as follows:

i) Uni-President Asparagus Juice with expiration date prior to May 18, 2012 is manufactured by the company's Uni-President Enterprises Corp., Taiwan.

ii) Sunkist Lemon Juice, Sunkist Lemon Juice Aloe Vera Drink with Pulp, Sunkist Orange Juice and Sunkist Orange Juice Drink is manufactured by the company's Country House Inc., Taiwan and exported to Malaysia by the Sunlight Foods Corp., Taiwan.

3. Accordingly, the Ministry of Health has contacted all the importers of the products involved in the recall action to implement the food products in the domestic market as soon as possible. In addition, MOH will also conduct monitoring in the local market and if the products involved are sold, the seizure actions will be carried out.

4. In addition, all imports of Uni-President Asparagus Juice, Sunkist Lemon Juice, Sunkist Lemon Juice Aloe Vera Drink with Pulp, Sunkist Orange Sunkist Orange Juice and Juice Drink by Company Country House Inc. Taiwan banned from entering the country (Inspection Level 6 under FoSIM-Food Safety Information System of Malaysia). For other food products imported from Taiwan buhan such as fruit juices, jelly, jam, yogurt and water sports, action and monitoring carried out at the market entrance.

5. MOF also announced today that the company's sports drink products Young Energy Resource Co.. 6. Accordingly, the public should not worry about the safety of food imported from Taiwan in view of the control imposed on the country's food involved.
